If Democrats did not possess double standards on racial issues, they would have no standards at all. The same applies to the Black political and civil rights establishments. The recent revelations of comments made in 2015 by former New York City Mayor and presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg are a good example.
According to The Washington Post, in a recently released audio clip from a 2015 speech at the Aspen Institute, Bloomberg discussed his controversial “Stop and Frisk” policies when he was Gotham’s chief executive, saying in part: “. . . we put all the cops in the minority neighborhoods. . . that’s where all the crime is. . . the way you get the guns out of the kids’ hands is to throw ‘em against the wall and frisk ‘em.”
Bloomberg is also quoted as stating that “95 percent of your murders, murderers and murder victims, fit one M.O. You can just take the description, Xerox it, and pass it out to all the cops. They are male minorities, 15 to 25.”
Let’s change the scenario
Imagine that President Trump had said that. You would have had Senator Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), most likely having a joint press conference calling Trump a racist and a racial profiler.
And don’t forget the Rev. Al Sharpton and what’s left of the Democratic presidential wannabees. They would have pounced like a cat on a mouse.
The merits of stop and frisk can be debated. However, to employ language such as “throw ‘em against the wall” conjures up images of police brutality that anti-police groups such as Antifa and the progressive Left protest against relentlessly.
The Left would have been outraged if these words came from Trump, but they are silent when they come from one who now calls himself a Democrat.
Where is the “Black Lives Matters” movement? Not a peep. It’s amazing how liberals, especially Black politicians, find a way to either be silent when Democrats utter racial comments or forgive them.
Notwithstanding Bloomberg’s remarks and apologies, he has been courting Black voters.
It appears to be bringing dividends. There is growing support for his campaign by prominent Blacks.
According to an article by Christina Greer in The Daily Beast, Bloomberg is getting endorsements from Black mayors around the country. Other Black Democrats willing to forgive Bloomberg include three members of the CBC: Rep. Lucy McBath, D-Ga., Del. Stacey Plaskett, D-Virgin Islands, and Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y.
Biden going down
Bloomberg is also gaining strength among Black voters in South Carolina. Vice President Joe Biden had considered it his “firewall” because of support from Blacks who comprise about two-thirds of the Democratic party voters. A recent Quinnipiac Poll found Black support for Bloomberg surging to 22 percent, with Biden’s support falling to 27 percent.
With the growing support for Bloomberg among Blacks, it is pretty evident that a Democrat can do or say just about anything negative about Blacks and be forgiven. A Republican making the same or similar comments would be called a racist and condemned.
Quite a double standard and show of racial hypocrisy!
