A short animated film about aviation pioneer Bessie Coleman and a live performance concerning her life will headline the eight annual South Florida Air Expo on April 26 and 27 at the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport.
The two-day event also will feature Discovery Flights, TAG (Touch and Go) flying competition, aircraft static displays and flight learning simulators and an aviation career fair.
During the opening ceremonies, actress/writer Karyn Parsons will introduce a 15-minute animated film, “Flying Free: The Bessie Coleman Story” on the life of famed aviation pioneer.
Parsons formerly starred on the hit 1990s show “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.’’
Coleman’s grandniece, Gigi Coleman, also will be on hand during the ceremony and will perform a one-woman show on the life of Bessie Coleman.
The TAG event includes intercollegiate flying competition between 25-40 pilots in two-person aircraft from Miami-Dade College, Broward College, Florida Memorial University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and commercial flight schools.
The event also will feature interaction with leaders in the aviation and aerospace industries, a kid’s zone and the opportunity for the public to experience $25 Discovery Flights. There also will be pilot safety briefings conducted by the FAA’s Federal Aviation Administration Safety Team (FAAST) representatives.
The Air Expo is open to the public on Saturday and admission is free. The Discovery flights cost a fee of $25. It’s scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It will be held at the Signature Flight Support, Hangar 51, 15001 NW 42nd Avenue, Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport.
