FROM WIRE REPORTS
Taraji P. Henson can now add author to her list of accomplishments.
“Around The Way Girl’’ is Henson’s newest project that details the life of the Academy Award-nominated actress, chronicling her time in an abusive relationship and getting pregnant while still in college at Howard University.
She recently told the “Tom Joyner Morning Show’’ why she decided to share her life story and “Hidden Figures,’’ her new film in theaters in January.
Encouraged by fans
“I felt like the story was needed. It wasn’t something that I said I was going to do. Once social media became very popular, I was able to talk to my fans. They would say ‘your story is so inspirational, you should write a book’. God gave me this cross to bear so I can share it,” Henson said.
“I’m so excited. The temperament of the world at that time was very scary. Who knew these women were behind all these men getting to space.”
Family life explored
In the book, which debuted this week, Henson writes about her family, the one she was born into and the one she created.
She shares stories of her father, a Vietnam vet who was bowed but never broken by life’s challenges, and of her mother who survived violence both in the home and on D.C.’s volatile streets.
She also opens up about her experiences as a single mother, a journey some saw as a burden but which she saw as a gift.
With humor and candor, she shares the challenges and disappointments of her journey and shows readers that behind the red carpet moments, she is ever authentic.
