Volusia SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO PARTICIPATE IN AUG. 16 KICKS 4 GUNS PROGRAM

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office will join in a popular crime-fighting program this week designed to get unwanted guns off the streets. Called Kicks 4 Guns, the program encourages citizens to turn in unwanted guns to law enforcement with no questions asked. This will mark the third year that the Sheriff’s Office has participated. And once again, the agency will make it even more convenient than ever for citizens to participate. For anyone in Volusia County who would like to turn in a gun, but can’t make it to one of the drop-off sites, the Sheriff’s Office will dispatch a deputy to pick up the weapon. Citizens who turn in guns can remain anonymous. One of 10 agencies participating in Thursday’s event, the Sheriff’s Office will give residents who turn in their guns a $50 Wal-Mart gift card. The gift cards were purchased with funds confiscated in criminal cases. The Sheriff’s Office’s drop-off point will be at the Volusia County Fairgrounds at 3150 E. New York Ave. just east of DeLand. “This is a great program, and we’re very proud to be a participant,” said Sheriff Ben Johnson. “If this prevents even one gun from getting into the wrong hands, it will have been well worth the effort.” The event is being coordinated by Central Florida CrimeLine. In addition to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, other participating law enforcement agencies include the Cocoa, Daytona Beach, Kissimmee, Ocoee, Orlando, Palm Bay and Winter Park police departments as well as Sheriff’s Offices in Orange and Osceola counties. During last year’s event, more than 2,300 guns were turned in at nine drop-off sites, including 143 that were collected by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office’s drop-off location will be open on Thursday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. All firearms must be unloaded, placed in a plastic bag and safely secured. Citizens should leave the gun in the vehicle until a Sheriff’s deputy safely removes it. Residents in Volusia County who want to make arrangements for a deputy to pick up their unwanted firearms and bring a gift card to them can call any one of the following numbers on Thursday and then press option 3: (386) 736-5999 (386) 248-1777 (386) 423-3888 Please remember to press option 3 to ensure proper routing of the call. ###
